A Cooking Lesson with a Surprise: Caterpillar Guests!

Today, we set out with the intention of writing a blog post all about Tayo’s latest creation for his cookbook—a delicious vegetable dish. The day started out perfectly. Tayo was busy in the kitchen, diligently washing and prepping all the fresh vegetables we had laid out. He began chopping up the broccoli, courgettes, and other ingredients, when we encountered an unexpected twist in our cooking adventure!

As Tayo sliced through the broccoli, something unusual caught his eye. There, nestled between the florets, was a fat, hungry caterpillar! We both paused, unsure of what to do next. Rather than panic, we decided to act quickly—Tayo found a plastic tub, and we carefully placed the little caterpillar inside, giving it a temporary new home.

However, the surprises weren’t over just yet. As Tayo continued washing the broccoli he had already chopped, another caterpillar—just as plump as the first—appeared! Suddenly, we found ourselves not only cooking but also caring for two unexpected kitchen guests.

The Caterpillar Chronicles Begin

We’ve now inherited two large, healthy caterpillars and have decided to keep a close eye on them. Hopefully, they won’t dehydrate, as we had initially washed the vegetables with salt. We’ll need to ensure their well-being and see if these caterpillars have the potential to transform into beautiful butterflies. Stay tuned—we’ll keep you updated on their progress and whether they’ll thrive under our watchful care.

The Final Dish

Despite the caterpillar interruption, Tayo didn’t let it derail his cooking. He went on to make a lovely vegetarian dish packed with flavor and nutrition. The recipe included courgettes, aubergines, broccoli, red peppers, and onions. For added flavor, Tayo mixed in sweet chili, Greek yogurt, herbs, and spices, and paired it all with a bed of fluffy basmati rice.

The dish was a success, and we’re proud to add it to Tayo’s growing collection of recipes for his cookbook. It’s a wonderful blend of vegetables and spices, with just the right balance of sweetness from the chili and tanginess from the yogurt.

A Lesson Beyond Cooking

What started as a simple cooking lesson quickly became an unexpected exploration of nature! Tayo’s creativity in the kitchen was matched by his curiosity about the caterpillars, reminding us that learning can take place in the most surprising ways. We’re excited to see where this caterpillar journey takes us, and we’ll definitely keep you posted on what happens next—whether they become butterflies or stay as part of our new kitchen pet family!
